Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 16, 2026
Dictalo is a transcription app for iOS and Android, developed by Federico Lagarmilla ("we", "us"). This policy explains what data the app handles, where it goes, and the choices you have.
Summary
- Dictalo has no servers and no user accounts. We never receive your recordings, transcripts or API keys.
- Your recordings, transcripts and everything else you create in the app are stored on your device.
- When you tap Transcribe or Summarize, audio or text is sent directly from your device to the AI provider you chose (Groq or OpenAI), using your own API key.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking. The Android app sends crash reports (see below); the iOS app does not.
Data stored on your device
Dictalo keeps the following in the app's private storage on your device:
- Audio you record or import
- Transcripts, summaries, notes and projects, including each project's instructions for summaries and its overview ("What I know about this project")
- Settings, such as your provider, default language and recording quality
- Your API key: in the iOS Keychain on iPhone, and in encrypted storage on Android
We have no access to this data.
Data sent to your AI provider
Dictalo uses third-party AI services to transcribe and summarize. You choose the provider and connect it with an API key from your own account with that provider:
- Groq: privacy policy · your data in GroqCloud
- OpenAI: privacy policy · API data privacy
What is sent, and when:
- Transcribe: when you tap Transcribe, the recording's audio and your language setting are sent to your provider. Long recordings are sent in several parts.
- Summarize: when you tap Summarize, the transcript and any notes you added are sent to your provider. If the recording belongs to a project, the project's instructions, its overview and summaries of recent recordings in that project are sent as well. From time to time, recent summaries from the project are also sent to update the project's overview.
- Key check: when you add an API key, Dictalo sends a request to the provider to confirm the key works.
Nothing is sent to a provider unless you take one of these actions. The provider handles this data under your own agreement with them, and their terms and privacy policy govern how it is stored and used. Both providers publish how they handle API data, including retention and use for model training, at the links above.
Sharing and exporting
When you copy, share or export a transcript, summary or audio file, it goes to the app or place you pick in your device's share sheet.
Google Drive export (Android only)
If you connect Google Drive, Dictalo asks for the drive.file permission, which only covers files that Dictalo creates. When you export, the content you selected (a summary, notes and/or the full transcript) is uploaded to a "Dictalo" folder in your Drive. Your Google account email and access tokens are stored only on your device. You can disconnect in Dictalo's Settings, or remove Dictalo's access from your Google Account, at any time.
Crash reports (Android only)
The Android app uses Firebase Crashlytics, a Google service, to report crashes. A crash report contains technical details about the error, such as the stack trace, device model, operating system version, app version and a random installation identifier. Dictalo does not add your recordings, transcripts, notes or API keys to crash reports. Privacy and security in Firebase.
The iOS app contains no crash-reporting or analytics tools. If you have turned on Share With App Developers in your iPhone's settings, Apple may share crash logs with us.
What we don't do
- We don't show ads or use analytics.
- We don't track you across apps or websites.
- We don't sell your data, and we don't share it with anyone other than the services described above.
Keeping and deleting your data
- Deleting a recording in Dictalo removes its audio, transcript and summary from your device.
- Deleting the app removes its data from your device. On iPhone, iOS may keep Keychain items, such as your API key, after the app is deleted.
- You can revoke an API key at any time in your Groq or OpenAI dashboard, which stops it from working anywhere.
- Data a provider has received is subject to that provider's retention policy. Use the provider's own controls, or contact them, to manage it. Dictalo cannot access your provider account.
Permissions
- Microphone: to record audio. Dictalo records only when you start a recording.
- Notifications (Android): to keep a recording running while the app is in the background.
Children
Dictalo is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
